Sarah Soquel MorhaimPosted: 17/02/2017
Sarah Soquel Morhaim is a Los Angeles-based artist who uses photography to explore experiences of presence and the nature and perception of time. Photographic images are the words in a language that also includes performance, film, formal constraints, and both subtle and wild experiments.
“Sarah Soquel Morhaim, whose photography has so transcended traditional ideas about taking pictures that it’s hard to call her a photographer at all. Translating the photographic language to bookmaking, film, and music, Morhaim has been creating work that touches on ideas of ritual and personal behavior for nearly a decade in Los Angeles.”
– Maxwell Williams for KCET Artbound
Morhaim’s editorial photography has appeared in many publications including W, Jalouse, New York Magazine, and Paris-LA, and clients include Levis and Focus Features. Portrait subjects include the icon Angela Davis, actor Ewan McGregor, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and the late artist Mike Kelley, to name a few. Her short films have screened at venues such as the Sundance Film Festival, AFI Fest, and Palm Springs International, and her art work has exhibited at MOCA, Family, and O.N.O. Gallery in Los Angeles. Her photographs from the set of the film ‘Beginners’ were exhibited in a three-person exhibition with Mike Mills and Todd Cole. Selections of her artist books have been collected by the Artist Book Collection at the MoMA Library and received mention in the New York Times Style Magazine. She also sings and plays guitar in SOQUEL CURRY, an experimental pop band with artist Aaron Curry.
